An Generosity of People We Don't Know: How a Person I Barely Knew Supported Me Obtain the Position That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a backpacking trip to Europe with a travel partner. Because my companion was considering pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had arranged a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a large 10-storey building on the UWS known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I my profession was, and I shared that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – close to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I consider applying for a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The Iraqi student came up to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but straight off told my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the confidence or self-assurance to approach someone at an prestigious college and request employment. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a job in Zurich where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
