A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
